Spiral UK Case Study: Dunhill Wood

13 August 2018

Spiral Staircases were installed with the addition of glass balustrades

Spiral UK was commissioned to install two spiral staircases to a new build residential property near Bristol. The installation consisted of a sweeping curved staircase to the entrance hall and a helical staircase to the indoor pool room.

The Main Entrance Curved Staircase

Situated to the side of the grand entrance hall, the sweeping curved staircase creates a dramatic entrance feature that draws your eyes up towards the upper floor landing balcony. The staircase curves elegantly between warm-toned structural wooden beams, surrounding a decorative pendant hanging feature. The glass balustrade and pendants add a decorative element to the design while allowing light to continue to flood the property.

To add another depth to the staircase, Spiral UK integrated LED lighting into the steps of the staircase which accentuates the warm tones offered by the wooden beams. Light from the tower windows, adjacent to the bespoke staircase, is captured by the stairs and the hanging glass pendant which reflects the light across the entrance hall.

At a glance, the full staircase has a complete floor to floor height of 3672mm and includes 20 risers, curved toughened laminated glass and a 60mm glass mounted timber handrail with leather cladding.

The Poolside Spiral Staircase

In addition to the grand entrance staircase, a poolside staircase was also installed to provide entry from the first floor down into the ground floor indoor pool. Curved toughened laminated glass was used for the balustrades as well as for the spiral staircase - this offered a flowing wave design that continued down into the pool water.

Curved Toughened Glass Balustrades

A concrete structure was used for the main staircase steps and central stair column, combined with clear glass balustrades, to offer a clean and fluid aesthetic. The frameless balustrade style is a great way to add structural elements without creating a light obstruction or take away from the elegant spiral stair design.

Glass Balustrades

Frameless toughened laminated glass balustrades are a popular design amongst architects due to the structural safety and contemporary clear design finish that doesn't cause a light obstruction or interfere with surrounding design features.
